  OCEAN CITY HISTORICAL MUSEUM

photo of museumOur prime location, the Museum, open all year round, is located in the Cultural Arts Center at1735 Simpson Avenue.  The admission is always free and our exhibits are quite extensive.  We have a large Sindia Exhibit, several Victorian rooms displaying a large collection of 19th Century furniture,
silver, china and glassware.  We also have period fashions and furs, dolls, toys, quilts, needlework, spinning wheels, sewing machines, an extensive picture display and many other articles related to Ocean City history.  The museum operates a gift shop with consignment, antiques, other appropriate gift items and books.

Our Seashore Cottage, located at 1139 Wesley Avenue, just a block off the Boardwalk at 12th Street, is only open during the summer months.  The cottage is furnished to represent the "typical seashore cottage" that one would expect to see in the late 1920s into the 1930s.  The Hobo Memorial, recently featured in a display of historic New Jersey sculptures, is located on the grounds of the Seashore Cottage.

Almost a period piece in itself, there is an old fashioned library in one corner of the Ocean City Historical Museum.  The libray has saved and organized a wall of books on Ocean City's past, the history of Cape May County and New Jersey as well as material on the museum's collectibles ---
furniture, porcelain, costumes, glassware, etc.  Also displayed are photographs, old city directories, deeds of Peck's Beach, Sindia documents, high school annuals, hotel registers, tract maps, newspapers headlining storms, the 1927 fire, and much more.

So --- if you want to find a photo of the Beach Patrol, evaluate an antique, or just browse through the way we were, check in with the museum office.   The library also invites you to donate your own memorabilia to this permanent record of our town.

The museum is constantly looking for new members and volunteers to assist in the activities of the museum.  If you are interested in becoming a member of the Friends of The Ocean City Historical Museum, please contact our office at the museum at 399-1801 or stop by at 1735 Simpson Avenue, Ocean City, NJ.
