The Saga of the Sindia
December 15, 1901

A FOUR MASTED barque called the Sindia was en route from Japan to New York when a severe storm developed.  On Sunday morning, December 15, 1901, she came ashore between 16th and 17th Streets in Ocean City. Several attempts were made to free her, but the Sindia did not respond.  There have been many stories and legends told about the rescue attempts of this ill-fated vessel.   Much of the cargo was taken out by divers and sold at the old Sindia store on the boardwalk, but the expense became too great, and a large part of the ship's valuable freight remains undisturbed.

Come see our extensive Sindia Exhibit at the Ocean City Historical Museum.  We have a large collection of Sindia artifacts, as well as a compilation of the various stories told about the legendary ship.
